Set against the backdrop of a suburban high school in Middle America, Beyond the Mat is the coming of age tale of Aaron Miller. Amidst the struggle of a disintegrating friendship, the tormenting of a crosstown wrestling rival, and the blossoming of a new love, Aaron is forced to come to terms with who he really is. Aaron's friendship is put on the line when best friend Bo, blinded by the desire for a rematch against crosstown wrestling rival Dominic, robs Aaron of his spot on the varsity wrestling team. Aaron is torn between his loyalty to his friend and his commitment to his sport. Fueled by the desire to succeed and the need to prove himself, Aaron embarks on a journey of self discovery. The drama culminates in an explosive finale at the State Wrestling Championship where more than just pride is on the line. It's a tale about two best friends, a chronicle about minority experiences in America, an uncensored look into the perilous world of high school wrestling, and ultimately the story of a teen who overcomes self doubt to find his true place.

Van M. Pham graduated from the Edward R. Murrow School of Communication at Washington State University with a BA in TV Broadcast Productions, and received his MFA in Film and Television from Chapman University, with emphasis in Film Directing. As winner of the ABC-Komo4 Fisher's Broadcasting Scholarship, Van went abroad to study film and production at the University of Wales, Aberyswyth, where he produced a short documentary, A Different Corner, which was screened and honored at numerous film festivals including winning "1st Place" and honored as the "Best in Show" amongst all the film and video submissions. From that experience and recognition early in his career achievements, Pham was inspired to further his passion for film directing. His feature script Beyond the Mat was selected as part of the Tribeca All Access, a program that recognizes and promotes diversity and ethnic stories. This opportunity at Tribeca All Access catapulted Pham with his directorial feature film debut of Beyond the Mat. Since Beyond the Mat, Pham has directed another feature film featured on Netflix Conjuring Spirit also known as Chung Cu Ma (Vietnamese title). Beyond directing movies, Pham's TV show Viet Model Project, in which he produced and directed, was broadcasted nationwide on the International Channel for 2 seasons. With his tv and film production background, Pham since then has been the owner and Executive Producer of the international beauty pageant event production, Miss Global.
